In 1926, Avo Uvezian was born into a musical family of Armenian extraction living in Beirut (Lebanon). Being a gifted young pianist, Avo dreamed of a great career as a musician. His talent and enormous commitment – still evident to this day – brought him success at an early age. Even while still a young man, he travelled the Near and Middle East with his own jazz trio. In 1947, the contacts he had made there led the young jazz pianist to the USA, where he studied classical piano and music composition at the renowned Julliard School of Music. Avo soon found himself playing with the great jazz musicians of the 1950s and 1960s – his dream of a career as a musician had been fulfilled. After moving to Puerto Rico in the 1980s, he opened a piano bar. This was where Avo discovered his love of cigars – they were to become his second great passion. Indeed, it was only a short way to get from connoisseur to cigar “composer”. In 1982, Avo made the acquaintance of cigar producer Hendrik Kelner in the Dominican Republic, where he soon had his own cigars rolled. The first cigar was a classic Belicoso format. Avo Uvezian was not the only one to be impressed by this format: his guests were too, and increasingly asked for his cigars. Avo was soon receiving as many compliments for his “Cigars in Perfect Harmony” as for his melodies. A harmonious success story had begun. The first AVO cigar went on sale in New York as early as 1988. Avo Uvezian began with a batch of 100,000 cigars – the figure today is over three million worldwide every year.
